• hong kong's first offshore lng terminal begins operation

date:2023-09-28

on september 21, the first offshore liquefied natural gas (lng) receiving terminal in hong kong, contracted by offshore oil engineering co., ltd., officially commenced operation, introducing a new source of natural gas for hong kong.

the hong kong offshore lng project was delivered on june 27, 2023. it primarily comprises a jacket-style dual-berth offshore lng receiving terminal, a land-based lng receiving station, and two submarine pipelines.

serving as the core of the project, the hong kong offshore lng receiving terminal is the world's first offshore offloading dual-berth facility with an all-steel structure. it can accommodate the simultaneous berthing and operations of two of the world's largest floating storage regasification units (fsrus) or lng transport ships. designed for a lifespan of 50 years, its construction was intricate, involving the assembly and installation of 28 individual units with a combined weight surpassing 35,000 tons. the project necessitated navigating through complex maritime zones, including the urmston road, the hong kong-zhuhai-macao bridge, submarine cable areas, and densely trafficked shipping regions, laying a total of 63 kilometers of submarine pipelines.

the project team from offshore oil engineering co., ltd. adeptly addressed challenges in the lng cryogenic system design and lng refueling system design, achieving close to 30 technological breakthroughs. they established several domestic records, such as attaining a maximum trenching depth of 8 meters and utilizing the bottom tow method to traverse the urmston road and the hong kong-zhuhai-macao bridge with a large-caliber submarine pipeline (30-inch diameter). the project's construction quality aligns with international advanced standards.

it's noted that, upon the commencement of the hong kong offshore lng project, the annual maximum inbound natural gas reception will reach 11 billion cubic meters. consequently, hong kong's natural gas power generation ratio will rise from 50% to 75%, further refining hong kong's energy provision framework and guaranteeing a more varied and dependable energy source for hong kong.
